Which check your building needs

  • CP17, commercial gas safety inspection: boilers, water heaters and other gas appliances in offices, shops, schools, hotels and plant rooms. £290 + VAT for up to two appliances, then £150 + VAT each.
  • CP42, commercial catering gas safety check: the kitchen as a whole and each cooking appliance, in restaurants, cafés, pubs and hotel kitchens. Done by our directors, who hold the commercial catering gas qualifications. £290 + VAT for up to two appliances, then £145 + VAT each.
  • Where people sleep: hotel rooms, staff accommodation and flats above a business need a yearly gas safety check and record under the landlord rules. See the landlord gas safety certificate page.

What the law asks

No law names a CP17 or a CP42. Regulation 35 of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 makes an employer keep the gas appliances, pipework and flues safe, and a check with a written record is the usual way to show it. HSE's catering guidance treats an inspection once a year as a reasonable minimum for a commercial kitchen. Where people sleep in the building, regulation 36 adds a yearly check with a record.

How a check works

  1. Tell us the address, the number of gas appliances and when the last check was.
  2. The office agrees a time, outside opening hours if the gas has to be off.
  3. A Gas Safe engineer checks each appliance, the pipework and the flues.
  4. You get the certificate for your records. Anything found is raised with you at the time, and any repair is quoted before it is done.

Commercial gas safety questions

What is a CP17 gas safety certificate?

A CP17 is the usual record of a gas safety inspection on commercial gas appliances and pipework, such as the boilers in an office, a shop or a plant room. It is an industry form: no law names it. It records each appliance checked and any defect found.

Is a commercial gas safety certificate a legal requirement?

The law does not name a certificate for a business. Regulation 35 of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 makes the employer keep gas appliances, pipework and flues safe, and an inspection with a written record is the usual way to show it. Where the building also has somewhere people sleep, such as hotel rooms or staff flats, regulation 36 adds a yearly check with a record.

What is the difference between a CP17 and a CP42?

A CP42 is the version for commercial catering: it covers the kitchen as a whole, including the interlock that links the gas to the ventilation, as well as each cooking appliance. A CP17 covers other commercial gas appliances, such as boilers and water heaters.

How much is a CP17 or a CP42?

A CP17 is £290 + VAT for up to two appliances, then £150 + VAT each. A CP42 is £290 + VAT for up to two appliances, then £145 + VAT each. Both prices are for businesses. Any repair found during the check is quoted before it is done.

Can the check be done outside opening hours?

Yes. Work that needs the gas off can be booked outside opening hours, so the kitchen or the building keeps running. The office agrees the time with you.

Who carries out the checks?

Gas Safe registered engineers (Gas Safe number 917055). CP42 checks in commercial kitchens are done by our directors, who hold the commercial catering gas qualifications.
