The CP42 check

A CP42 normally records two things: the kitchen as a whole, meaning the gas isolation, the pipework, the interlock that links the gas supply to the ventilation, and the extraction; and then each appliance. Any defect found goes on the record. No law names the form: the duty behind it is regulation 35 of the 1998 gas safety regulations, and HSE's catering guidance treats an inspection once a year as a reasonable minimum. Our directors carry out the checks. The CP42 guidehas the detail, and the FAQ the short answer.

Interlocks, ventilation and carbon monoxide alarms

HSE says a kitchen with mechanical extraction should have an interlock that stops the gas reaching the appliances if the ventilation fails, and that a manual bypass is not allowed. BS 6173, the standard for gas catering installations, is not retrospective, so an older kitchen without one should assess the risk and control it. HSE also says a domestic carbon monoxide alarm is not normally suitable in a commercial kitchen.Gas interlocks andalarms in kitchens.

The drain that keeps blocking

A kitchen drain that blocks again and again has a reason. Fat and grease cool and harden as they travel, and narrow the pipe until it closes. Clearing it again only moves the date of the next blockage. We clear the run, find out why it keeps happening, and quote any repair that would stop it before it goes ahead.

Fat, oil and grease. Letting fat into a drain that joins a public sewer, where it is likely to obstruct the flow, is an offence under section 111 of the Water Industry Act 1991. Paragraph 2.21 of Approved Document H, the Building Regulations guidance on drainage, says drains from a commercial hot food kitchen should include a grease separator, or some other way of removing grease that works as well.Fat and the sewer law, andgrease trap rules for kitchens in London.

What kitchens ask us

Do you carry out CP42 gas safety checks?

Yes. The annual Commercial Catering gas safety check is carried out by our directors, who hold the Commercial Catering gas qualifications, on the kitchen’s gas appliances and pipework, and you get the CP42 certificate for your records. Anything found during the check is raised with you at the time.

Is a CP42 check a legal requirement?

The CP42 itself is an industry form, and no law names it. What the law requires, under regulation 35 of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, is that the employer keeps the kitchen’s gas appliances, pipework and flues safe. HSE’s catering guidance treats an inspection once a year as a reasonable minimum, and the CP42 is the usual record of it.

Does the CP42 check cover the interlock and ventilation?

The usual CP42 form has a part for the kitchen as a whole, which records the interlock linking the gas supply to the ventilation, and the extraction and ventilation themselves, as well as a part for each appliance. Installing or altering an interlock or a ventilation system is separate work and is not part of the check.

The kitchen drain keeps blocking. Can you stop it?

We clear the blockage, find out why it keeps coming back, and quote any repair that would stop it before it goes ahead. In a kitchen, fat and grease hardening inside the pipe is often the reason.

What happens if something fails out of hours?

Call the 24 hour line, answered 365 days a year. We are based in Camden, and the office gives an arrival window for your address when you call.

How are call outs and repairs charged?

The hourly rate is confirmed when you book. A call out is charged by the hour, and a return visit or further work is quoted first. A drainage call out is charged the same way. From £150 + VAT per engineer for the first hour between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. Outside those hours, weekends included, the first hour is £290 + VAT. The first hour covers the call out and finding the fault. After that the visit is charged by the hour, with materials and parking added where they apply. A return visit or further work is quoted first. Larger jobs get a written quote first, and nothing proceeds until you agree it.

Which areas do you cover?

We work for businesses across all of London, from our base in Camden NW1.

How does an arrangement usually start?

With one kitchen: book its gas safety check, or send us the drain that keeps blocking, and judge us on that. For a group of sites, we survey one first and quote the scope and the price in writing before anything is booked.
