Boiler making a banging noise? What it means and what to do

A boiler making a banging noise is giving a useful clue. Different sounds point to different faults, and a couple of them mean you should switch the boiler off and call an engineer rather than wait.

What the noise usually means

A deep banging or thumping, especially when the heating fires up, is often “kettling”: limescale or sludge has built up on the heat exchanger, water gets trapped against the hot metal and flashes into steam, and the steam bubbles collapse with a bang. London’s hard water makes this common. Kettling rarely fixes itself, and the longer it runs, the more stress it puts on the heat exchanger, which is one of the most expensive parts to replace.

A rapid knocking or tapping that follows the pipework rather than the boiler is usually pipes expanding against joists or clips as they heat. Annoying, but rarely urgent.

A rumbling or gurgling often points to air in the system or a circulation problem, such as a failing pump or a blocked section of pipework.

A loud bang at ignition, like a small explosion in the casing, can mean delayed ignition: gas building up before it lights. Treat this one seriously. Switch the boiler off and have it looked at by a Gas Safe registered engineer before using it again.

Checks that are safe to do yourself

  • Look at the pressure gauge on the front. Most systems should sit around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. Very low or very high pressure can cause noise and is often fixable with the filling loop or by bleeding a radiator.
  • Bleed the radiators. Trapped air migrates to the highest points and a radiator key costs a couple of pounds.
  • Check whether the noise follows a schedule. Noise only when the heating comes on points to the heating circuit; noise when you run a hot tap points to the hot water side.

What we would rather you did not do: open the boiler casing, adjust gas valves, or keep resetting a boiler that bangs at ignition. Gas work is a legal matter as well as a safety one, and it belongs with a Gas Safe registered engineer.

When to switch it off and call

Switch the boiler off and call an engineer if the bang happens at ignition, if you can smell gas (call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first, then a Gas Safe engineer for the repair), if the noise arrived together with a pressure drop or a leak, or if the boiler is locking out with an error code.

For everything else, a normal repair visit is the right speed. The visit is charged by the hour, and a return visit or further work is quoted first. If the diagnosis is kettling, a power flush or a heat exchanger clean is usually the fix, and a yearly service afterwards keeps it from coming back.

In short

A banging boiler is usually limescale, air or pipework movement, and none of those get better on their own. A bang at ignition or any smell of gas means switch it off now.
